Eyelid Lifting Techniques and Specialized Procedures

Eyelid lifting is a group of specialized procedures (ophthalmology and cosmetic) aimed at correcting drooping eyelids, sagging skin, or weak levator muscles.

These techniques not only improve vision but also rejuvenate the eyes by intervening in excess skin, eyelid fat, or internal muscle structures.

Eyelid Surgery / Excess Skin Removal

Description: The doctor removes excess skin and fat from the upper eyelid, then sutures to create a new eyelid crease or restore the natural eyelid line.

Application: For people with drooping eyelids due to aging or excess fat obstructing vision. This procedure is performed standardized at specialized medical facilities.

Eyelid Muscle Shortening / Reshaping Technique

Description: This is a specialized procedure that directly affects the levator muscle that is weak or congenitally underdeveloped. The doctor will cut away a portion of the levator muscle to increase tension, helping the eyelid open wider.

Application: Often indicated to treat ptosis (drooping eyelids) and improve the mechanical function of the eye.

Frontal Muscle Suspension Surgery

Description: A technique to correct upper eyelid retraction (commonly seen in thyroid diseases), helping to restore the natural anatomical and physiological structure of the eye.

Non-Surgical Methods (Medical Aesthetics)

Description: Uses technologies such as laser and ultrasound (like HIFU) to stimulate collagen production and tighten the skin around the eyes.

Application: Suitable for mild drooping eyelids, early-stage sagging skin, and for those who do not want surgical intervention.

Post-operative Care and Recovery after Eyelid Surgery

To recover quickly after blepharoplasty surgery, follow proper hygiene practices using saline solution, ice packs (for the first 48 hours), and warm compresses (from day 4 onwards). Avoid rubbing your eyes, wear protective sunglasses, avoid foods that can cause keloid scarring, and schedule a follow-up appointment for suture removal after 5-7 days. Proper post-operative care will help reduce swelling and speed up the process of the eyelids settling into their natural shape.

Wound Cleaning and Care

  • Cleaning: Use a cotton swab soaked in saline solution to gently wipe the eyelid area 2-3 times a day, keeping the incision dry.
  • Cold Compress: For the first two days, use an ice pack or wrap ice in a clean towel and apply for 15-20 minutes every 2-3 hours to reduce swelling and bruising.
  • Warm Compress: From day 4 onwards, switch to gentle warm compresses to help reduce bruising.

Things to absolutely avoid

  • Absolutely do not rub, scratch, or apply strong pressure to the eye area.
  • Avoid medications and foods that may cause bleeding or keloid scarring, such as: Vitamin E, aspirin, water spinach, beef, seafood, sticky rice, and chicken for the first 2-4 weeks.
  • Do not apply eye makeup and avoid direct contact of water, cosmetics, or facial cleansers with the wound until the stitches are removed.
  • Limit prolonged use of electronic devices (phones, computers) to prevent eye strain.

Eye protection and daily activities

  • Comprehensive protection: Wear sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat to protect your eyes from UV rays and dust when going outdoors.
  • Sleeping position: Elevate your head with a pillow at approximately 30 degrees during the first few days to reduce blood pooling and swelling.
  • Follow-up appointment: Remove stitches as scheduled (usually 5-7 days).

Normal Signs & Need to Contact Your Doctor Immediately

  • Normal signs: Mild swelling and bruising around the eyes and nose for the first 3-5 days. Light pink discharge (change the dressing frequently to ensure hygiene).

  • Abnormal signs: Continuous nosebleeds, persistent swelling and redness that does not subside, severe pain, or signs of pus formation. Contact your surgeon immediately for examination.
